Six Great Superfoods to Incorporate into Your Holiday Recipes

Medical science has proven that eating unhealthy foods, such as those loaded with sodium and saturated fats, can result in diseases like cancer and cause heart issues. However, there is just as much evidence to support that eating healthy foods, like fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish, helps to fight these same diseases and makes you more vital while adding years to your life. The health-promoting effects of these foods are so strong, and some companies are holding lunch n learn events to educate their employees on the benefits of eating healthy.

Some of the most health-promoting foods have been labeled “superfoods,” as these foods contain some of the highest levels of health-promoting nutrients of any food found on earth. According to Harvard Medical School, here is a list of six of the most potent superfoods you should regularly be eating:

 1) Avocados

Classified as a fruit and considered a berry, Avocados contain almost two dozen vitamins and minerals, including folic acid, potassium, vitamins C and E, as well as B vitamins and are loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fat.

 2) Berries

Aside from being naturally sweet, berries have some of the highest levels of disease-fighting antioxidants and nutrients of any food. Generally speaking, the darker the color, the more nutrient-dense the berry.

 3) Fish

Fish are a great source of protein and many species contain very high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, shown to help prevent many diseases. Species with the highest amount of omega-3s are lake trout, Arctic char, salmon, and tuna.

 4) Leafy Greens

Like berries, the darker the color, the better. Dark, leafy greens are a good source of vitamin A and C, calcium, and phytochemicals.

 5) Nuts

Many nuts, like walnuts, almonds, and pecans, have high amounts of disease-fighting alpha-linolenic acids and are a high-quality source of protein.

 6) Your Holiday Dinner: Turkey Plus Three

It has long been said that turkey causes drowsiness due to it containing high levels of tryptophan; however, this is false. Turkey doesn’t contain any higher levels of the sleep-inducing chemical than pretty much any other meat. Like most fowl, turkey is high in protein, folic acid, and low in saturated fat and cholesterol and is a phenomenal source of protein.

Studies have shown that cranberries may reduce the risk of life-threatening illnesses like heart disease, cancer, and stroke and helps to prevent urinary tract infections. This is because the berries supply higher than average amounts of free-radical destroying antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E.

Pumpkin, classified as a squash, is loaded with beta-carotene and vitamin C, both known to be immune system boosters, and potassium that works to counteract the effects of sodium. Like pumpkin, sweet potatoes contain high amounts of fiber, antioxidants, and beta-carotene.
